Utkal Baptist Mandali Sammilani is a body of Churches that is in Gajapati District, Orissa, India. It is an indegenous institution which controls the Churches in its social and religious activities. The Headquarters of Utkal Baptist Mandali Sammilani is at Talada, Gajapati, Orissa.

Before we look into the Utkal Baptist Mandali Sammilani we must know how Christianity came to India and then Orissa.

St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, came to India in 52 A.D., and landed at Kodungallur on Kerala (then Malabar) coast. He preached the Gospel to the Brahmin families of Kerala, many of whom received the faith. He established seven Churches there. It is said that he frequently visited Malayattoor hills for prayer. Later, he moved on to the east coast of India. He was martyred in 72 A.D. by a fanatic at Little Mount (near Chennai) and his body was buried at Mylapore (near Chennai).

Baptist Christian missionaries first came to Orissa in 1822 during the British rule. As one of the poorest regions of India, Orissa has been fertile ground for missionary work. In several districts the people have been open to conversion, where they today form a significant fraction of the population. Christianity flourished in Orissa between 1850 to 1947. The missionaries came closer to people in need and helped out of their heart. So, many people, even higher caste tribes wanted to embrace Christianity in Orissa.

Brief History of Utkal Baptist Mandali Sammilani

During English reign, the Maharaja of Gajapati divided the southern Orissa under Madras provience into 18 ‘mutha’s.

Rev. J.A. Glandening, a Canadian missionary came to Paralakhemundi in 1902. There was no road or other communication. There was fear of thief. Rev. J.A. Glandening started his work at Buruding or Dhipagudi. The present Gumma was already established by that time. The first baptised person of the area (most probably in the whole of Sammilani) was Biswanath Edla who is the father of Habel Edla. He was baptised at Paralakhemundi on March 20, 1907. Madhab Pani was also baptised with him on the very day. Pratima Pani, wife of Madhab Pani baptized on Dec 26, 1908. Madhab Pani is the uncle of Suratha Pani. Dutika Palo, Rutupurna Sadangi and Mark Sadangi were baptized at Paralakhemundi on Jan 23, 2010. Haripani Jena got baptized at Parlakhemundi on Sep 3, 1912. He is one of the prides of the soil. He became the MLA in British India. He is the first high school pass out of the soil. He also a multi-talented man.

The present Eye Hospital situated to the suburb of Paralakhemundi, called Ranipentha is their outcome. The Canadian missionaries were working in Serango area and served the people in the area. They also preached the Gospel simultenausly. They set up a hospital at Serango which is functioning till today. The Canadian missionaries purchased land from Mr. Durmana Bardhan (late) (Talada) and built an office for them which is now the headquarters of Utkal Baptist Mandali Sammilani. Eminent persons like Rev. Allaby (father of Eric Allaby) and other God-fearing persons were active in the area.

On Mar 3, 1910 Baptist Church at Burudingi was established. The Church was established without a pastor in the Church. Ofcourse, the Church was established with the appointment of Madhab Pani as a Deacon and Bacharan Roul as Secretary. Later on the Church got Sahadev Roul as its Pastor. It is noteworthy to mention that, all these persons were from present day Gumma, which was called Puruna (means old) Gumma in that time.

The following persons from present Gumma shared the Gospel and won many for Christ. These people were Mark Sadangi, Netra Singh, Chandradhwaja Badanayaka, Ashok Limma, Raghumani Palo and Purna Chandra Pani.

1) A new office building at Talada with an appointment of a watchman (local people should be given priority) and the watchman should get regular monthly salary.

2) Appoint of officer bearers :

Up to 5 persons from each main Church (mandali) and minor Church (samaja) should get together somewhere in the Sammilani (or at the Headquarters) and there should be a voting system for the office bearers. Expenses of the participants from the villages should be born by the respective mandali or samajas and the existence office bearers should come to the Headquarters with their own expenses.

3) The income and expenditure statement must read out in the annual convention (Bada Sabha) of the Sammilani.

4) One person from each mandali/samaja should be selected (by respective mandalis and samajas) every year to participate in the decision making body at the Sammilani Headquarters. Office bearers should attend the meeting but they should not participate in the meeting i.e. they should be the silent spectators.

Some examples of decision making are – Finding out income source for the year, budgeting, formulating/modifying some principles of the Sammilani if necessary only for the better spiritual and social welfare of the people in the Sammilani. No principle should be modified for personal gain. Arrangments for the annual convention (Bada Sabha) i.e. who is(are) to deliever the word of God in the convention, who are the mandali or samaja those broken the law and principles of the Sammilani and what actions should be taken with love etc.

5) There should be photo/video recording of the Bada Sabha only for the welfare of the people. This should not be used, in any cirmustances, for personal gain. Budget should be prepared for the same by the decision-making committee.

6) Every mandali/samaja should send their monthy reports (good/bad) to the Sammilani and that should be documented properly for future generation.

7) The Sammilani must not be controlled by a single individual.

8) Because of the fear of indiscipline the Sammilani help any mandali/samaja or individual in any circumstances. But every welfare work should be done as a whole.

9) Attention should be given on the subject – No individual should use the video recording/photograph etc. for his personal gain (i.e. use any of the Sammilani resources especially Bada Sabha photos and video recordings to gain donors (financial)).

10) No lad/lass/adult person should be given opportunity to sing solo, say/recite/read Bible verses in the Bada Sabha, as there are many talented persons in the Sammilani and it is not possible to allow everyone to perform their skills. It might create a chaos.

11) No individual should be given an opportunity to advertize anything – neither about his/her organization/nor Gospel work, nor Gospel audio/video, casstte, books…. etc.

12) Except emergency prayer request like if one is in death-bed, if one is in the hands of some terrorists, no prayer request should be entertained. Because if this system prevails the number of prayer request will reach to the Bada Sabha dias that it would take hours (several hours) to read it.

13) Since volley ball is a risk-free game, the Sammilani should promote it in every mandali/samajaa and it should conduct volley ball tournament in a specific period of the year and distribute prize to the winner and runners-up in the Bada Sabha. The Bible says that, it is profitable (though not as much profitable as the spiritual things are). The Bible also says that our body is the temple of God. Shouldn’t we keep fit the temple of God?

14) Every marriage in the Sammilani must be registered for the security of the brides. It is not the place to discuss the disadvantages of marrying without registering in the Sammilani. Dowry system must be banished. And (if) anyone who inclicts or forsakes his wife without a valid reason (Please note what Jesus instructs/commands what to do and what must not to do in the Book of Matthew regarding the matter. I do not discuss it here) should be outcasted as an example for others.

15) Anyone with anti-Bible doctrines must not be entertained in any of the mandali or samaja of the Sammilani.

16) We know, there is a system of dano (offering) and swechchha dano (it is also offering). When dano(offering) is collected people give as they wish and even in the swechchha dano(i.e. offering) also people give as they wish. So, what is the difference between dano and swechchha(it is ‘own will’ in Oriya). So, do we give the dano obligatory? But we know, it is not obligatory. We give as we wish.

17) Because of lack of space it is not possible to give all suggestion. Many such princles should be regulated by the Decision-Making Committee as said above and the copies should be forwared to every mandali and samaja.

01 Burudingi – Established on Mar 7, 2010 (Though believers of Buruding those fled to Gumma, Phalariguda (today’s Ashrayagada) and Serango, not all the three Churches are attributed to all the events, facts, history etc. associated with Buruding, except Phalariguda i.e. today’s Ashrayagada, as maximum believers those fled to the three different Churches were living at Phalariguda)

02 Badapada – Established on Mar 23, 1913

03 Serango – Established on Mar 14, 1918

04 Rayagada – Established on Mar 19, 1922

05 Narayanpur – Established in 1923

06 Jhalarsingh – Established on Dec 14, 1930

The Sammilani was born on Feb 19, 1922 at Serango, Gajapati (then Ganjam) with the combination of Buruding, Badapada and Serango and the branches of the major Churches. The Sammilani born with an annual Maha Sabha held at Serango on the very day. The convention was held from Feb 19, to Feb 21, 1922. The Sammilani was named as “Paralakhemundi Malo Christian Mandali Sammilani”. Ofcourse, the name of the Sammilani has been changed 5 times for various reasons. In 1940 the name changed to “Ganjam Malo Canadian Baptist Utkala Christiya Sammilani” because it was not confined in the Paralakhemundia area. The leaders wanted to broaden it to entire Ganjam District (now Ganjam and Gajapati). The leaders saw that no linguistic people group other than Oriya and Soura were in the Sammilani, so they wanted to add the word ‘odia’ and ‘saura’ in the name of the Sammilani. So, in 1947 the name of the Sammilani changed into “Ganjam Malo Canadian Baptist Saura Odia Khrista Mandali Sammilani.” Then the leaders thought that the Sammilani is equipped well with its survival and they felt the word ‘Canadian’ be removed from the name of the Sammilani and in 1958, the name changed into “Ganjam Malo Saura Odia Baptist Mandali Sammilani”. The same people group was separated from the Sammilani, so again the name was changed into “Ganjam Malo Odia Baptist Mandali Sammilani” on Feb 16, 1961. Meanwhile, some portion of undivided Koraput District was added into the Sammilani. Prominent of the portion was Putasingh (which is now in present Rayagada District). Since the Sammilani was not confined to Ganjam District (present Ganjam and Gajapati District) only, the name, for the last time, was changed into “Utkal Baptist Mandali Sammilani”.

The first Church i.e. Buruding Church members were people from Serango, Bhramarpur and Puruna Gumma (present Gumma) and these people used to join the worship service at Buruding Church before the formation of the Sammilani i.e. before Feb 19, 1922.

Social Customs

(1) Marriage : 99.9% are arranged marriages. Girls do not talk with the boys before marriage. The groom side send message to the bride’s through a mediator and date is fixed accordingly. First both side visit each other’s house and then after mutual conversation day for the bachchan, china etc. fixed. The Sammilani has passed that only 7 people from groom side are allowed for bachchan. Then during bachhan infront of the guests at the bride’s house date for marriage is fixed. The grood doesn’t go for bachchan. Modern band parties are allowed in many villages of the Sammilani. There is no specific regulation/law passed by the Sammilani regarding this matter. Some villages like Chheligada avoid modern band parties.

On the marriage day 100 on an average from the groom side go to the bride’s house for marriage. They usually reach on the marriage day. After they reach, they are given guest treatment and after china (bagdan) the marriage ceremony take place. Before marriage the local pastor asks the willingness of the bride and the groom in addition to the close members of the family although they are agreed previously. Marriage process consists of sharing from the word of God, singing solo or dual on the marriage from both side, announcements of gifts, if any, to the groom etc. After the marriage ceremony is completed the groom side is treated with a feast. Within a few hours the groom side takes the bride with modern band or with a simple Christian procession as per the arrangment of the groom side.

After the groom side reach at the destination, the couple take part in the procession. After the feast there held a procession. Some villages dance till the dawn of the day.

(2) Death : When a person dies, according to the language of Paul, it is usually said that the person went to be with the Lord. Deseased person is buried as all Christians do. Three days after a person is buried a custom is there to have a feast called tinidinia in which only the close relatives of the deseased person and all the kin entitled with the same title of the deseased person only take part in the feast. The members of the bereaved family are comforted by their relatives with feast which is called ‘randhi khuaiba’.

Haripani Jena – He studid in M R Boys High School, Paralakhemundi with the help of Dr. Glandening. After his high school studies he appointed as a teacher in Mission School, Paralakhemundi. Then, he was appointed in the Immigration Dept. Berhampur. He resigned from the post. He was MLA from 1933-1941. In 1941 Rayagada was attacked which is one of the prominent events of the Sammilani. He involved in Gospel work 1942 onwards. He was baptised in September 3, 1912.

Madhab Pani – He was the uncle of Pani Babu (Suratha Pani) and one among the Susamachar Pracharakas. He was born on Mar 20, 1907. He started Church Jan 14, 1923 onwards.

Well know as Pani Babu. Perhaps the most Bible learned man of the Sammilani. He was born at Buruding between 1900 to 1910. He studied at Paralakhemundi from 1920 – 1927. He studied upto 10th class with the help of Dr. Glandening. He was involved in the Gospel during his high school years. Then he became a teacher in Mission School, Parlakhemundi. He came to live at Gumma in 1928 as Buruding was collapsed. Then he was sent to Kakinada by Dr. Glandening because of his excellency in academic aspect and his interest in Gospel work and Bible studies. He studied theology in Kakinada in English medium. He had profound knowledge in English language. Literature books and Bible commentaries were being sent to him by post. He was a man of the Bible, a man of prayer and a man of books. He also got priest (purohito) licence from the Govt. Another priest during that time was Paul Bebarta (Narayanpur). Nirod Ch. Nayak (Serango) became the Govt. licence holder in later days. Pani Babu not only was a Govt. licence holder priest, but also a govt. licence holder evangelist. He never wanted to be an office bearer at any Church. Ofcourse, without his consent once he was forcefully selected as the Treasurer of the Sammilani. He had profound knowledge in Saura language. He had taken the lead role in the Saura Sammilani. He was also so fond of the Saura people group that, when he was unable to walk a long way, they (the sauras) used to carry him with a chair. Pani Babu went to be with the Lord on Dec 29, 1987 at Berhampur. He was buried by the Baptist Church, Berhampur. His wife Mariyam Pani went to be with the Lord on Feb 6, 2003.

He studid in M R Boys High School, Paralakhemundi with the help of Dr. Glandening. After his high school studies he appointed as a teacher in Mission School, Paralakhemundi. Then, he was appointed in the Immigration Dept. Berhampur. He resigned from the post. He was MLA from 1933-1941. In 1941 Rayagada was attacked which is one of the prominent events of the Sammilani. He involved in Gospel work 1942 onwards. He was baptised in September 3, 1912.
